FAQ
Services and Pricing
Please see the Commissions page HERE.
Base pricing is listed in United States Dollar (USD) and is subject to change according to the complexity, difficulty, size and medium of each individual project.
By commissioning me and upon sending payment, it is understood that you have read, understood and agree to the Terms of Service as outlined here. It serves to protect the interests of both the Client(s) and the Artist (myself). If you have any questions or require
clarification on any points, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Payment
Prices are listed in United States Dollar (USD). Currently, only Paypal and/or credit card via Paypal can be accepted.
When paying for a commission, I will initiate and issue an invoice to you. Please do not send unsolicited payment unless it is intended as a gratuity.
Full payment is expected before work begins on all commissions up to $250USD.
For transactions over $250USD, half may be paid up front, with the second half expected upon completion & before you receive the final, full-resolution image. The client has the option to pay in full up front if they wish, though not required.
Contact
The best way to get a hold of me is via email (gryxander[at]gmail.com). I do try to check notes and PMs, though I’ve been known to go for a week or two without checking back into gallery sites.
All commission related discussion shall be conducted by email.
Emails are generally answered within 2 working days, though may be a bit longer if I am creating an update/WIP/sketches to accompany my reply. If a week has passed and you have not heard back, please feel free to resend or check in with me.
I also have a public Twitter account (@gryxander) where I try to post WIPs on. You can send me quick questions there by Tweet or DM as well.
Rating & Subject Matter
I am willing to depict anything from G to R rating. I enjoy a challenge and am quite open-minded when it comes to subject matter and/or fetishes, so no need to be shy about asking.
If I am not comfortable with your idea or feel that I cannot accomplish it, I will simply let you know and may suggest another artist who may be better suited to your project.
I am firm on several subjects that I will not depict:
• Underaged characters in sexual situations
• Watersports
• Scatplay
• Bestiality (Between humans and natural animals. I may make exceptions for fantasy creatures.)
• Racism or Hateful concepts (Violence, e.g. war/battlefield scenarios, does not fall under this)
For characters not belonging to the client, please obtain permission from the owner. They should contact me directly if possible to give consent.
Ordering
To propose a commission, please email me (gryxander[at]gmail.com) with references, what you would like, and your Paypal email address. Commissions will be accepted and discussed through email only.
An order email should include, at minimum:
• Type of Commission (sketch, flat, full render, etc.)
• Description of what you would like (e.g. setting, character position, pose, costuming, etc.)
• Character reference (visual references are preferred, though I can work from text)
• Your Paypal address (for invoicing, if the project is accepted)
• Your FA/dA/Tumblr username (so that I can credit you correctly in the commission & queue)
I like to work with at least a little direction or at least have some information about your character’s personality to help create a canon image. Visual character references are great, though I can work without as well. If you have a certain pose in mind, link to a photograph or existing image can help describe what you are looking for.
Additional Notes
In your email, please also let me know the following, if applicable:
• If the piece is intended as a gift or should be held as a surprise until a certain time.
• If you require completion before a certain date. I do not accept rush work, so please give me ample time to create your image (at least 2 weeks,
more for larger projects).
• If you need a specific size or format.
• Please let me know as soon as possible if you plan to order an alternate/’paperdoll’ version of an image. This helps me plan my workflow.
• If you would like your piece to remain private/offline. An additional fee may apply. Please understand that posting commissions is my way of
advertisement, so this helps to balance any potential loss of business.
• If your commission is intended for commercial work. Please read more on this near the end of the document.
About Group Commissions/Multiple Clients
Some projects may involve several characters belonging to multiple clients.
The clients will be responsible for resolving conflicts of interest and discussing scenario/WIPs/changes between themselves. Please discuss the project between your party, then elect one person (Lead) to correspond with me and convey this information.
I prefer to work directly with only one individual in order to prevent confusion and any contradicting information.
To encourage transparency, updates and WIPs from myself will be forwarded to all clients involved.
With regard to payment, the invoice may be sent to one person, or I can divide and split the total between party members as directed. If so, it will be the responsibility of the clients to ensure all invoices are fulfilled.
Work Process
1) Upon receipt of your order email, I will let you know if your commission is accepted or declined. If accepted, I will send an
invoice by Paypal. If your idea has any additional fees as outlined in the Pricing Guide, I will send you a total quote to be approved before invoicing.
2) Once the invoice is paid, I will add you to the commission queue. For status, please check the latest journal entry on FA or the listing found here.
Turnaround time will vary though I strive to have all pieces completed within a reasonable timeframe. I generally try and work in order of project/payment received, though I may jump back & forth between smaller and larger commissions to keep a fresh perspective.
3) If applicable, a sketch will be emailed to you for your approval. Larger/scenic projects may have several thumbnails to choose from. Please try to request any major† alterations at this stage. Clients are allowed up to two large revisions (or equal amount in minor* changes), so please be concise when communicating. Any additional sketches or rework can be purchased at an extra cost. Please see the section WIPs and Changes below for more information.
4) Once approved, work will continue on your piece until completion. Additional WIP stages may occur before then. Please see the section WIPs and Changes below for more information.
5) When the commission is finished, I will send you a full resolution and a web resolution copy by email for approval.
For digital work, you will receive a 300dpi file, usually at least 900-1000px minimum.
By default, final images will be provided in JPG format. Flattened PSDs and other file formats are available on request.
WIPs and Changes
Work in Progress updates (WIPs) are generally provided to the client to ensure that the piece is progressing satisfactorily. Feedback is welcome and changes may be requested at certain stages depending on the commission type, outlined below:
Sketch commissions will not have any WIP stages due to their short production time
Flat Colour commissions will receive a sketch checkpoint and a linework checkpoint.
Full Render commissions receive a sketch and a combined line & flat checkpoint.
* Minor Alterations : These are changes such as small colour adjustments or touch-up work.
† Major Alterations : These are changes that would require extensive rework such as composition, pose, expression, character design, etc.
Up to two major revisions may be requested at the sketch phase without incurring extra fees. Adjustments in linework for larger projects will be put to the artist’s discretion.
For example, change of facial expression can usually be considered a minor change, while adjustment of limb placement is usually major.
An additional fee may apply for any change requests outside the regular allowance. This is to cover the time and work involved. If revisions are required as a result of my own oversight (i.e. overlooking previously supplied information), these will not apply toward the allowance.
Artistic Liberty Commissions
A ‘Surprise’ / ’Wing-It’ option may sometimes be available and are offered only when announced by journal entry. These are set at a discounted rate from the usual prices in exchange for artistic freedom. No sketches or approval stages will be provided but I will create an image for you based on the information given to me.
Once you have received the final product, I will not be able to make any major alterations, but will offer corrections if I have missed any character details that were previously specified. I may also do additional upgrades (shading, background, etc.) at no additional cost if feeling inspired.
Refunds & Cancellations
A client may request a cancellation at any time before project completion.
• If work has not begun on your commission, a full refund can be given.
• If I have started, you will receive a partial refund based on work already completed.
Sorry, no refunds are available for sketch commissions. For any tier above:
Cancellation at the sketch phase – 75% refund
Cancellation beyond that – 50-10% refund
You will receive a copy of the unfinished piece with the refund.
• For finished work, no refund is available.
If you cancel your commission, I reserve the right to rework the piece or to reuse any sketches, concepts, or thumbnails that stemmed from the project.
As the artist, I retain the right to cancel your commission and issue a full refund at any point due to poor/difficult communication, rude or inappropriate behavior, or personal tragedy.
Copyright & Commercial Work
Standard commission rates provided in the Pricing Guide are for personal, non-commercial use only.
This means that a client may:
• Upload/repost commissioned work to personal accounts or galleries (Credit or a link back is always appreciated, though not necessary)
• Crop icons from the image for PERSONAL use
• Resize or crop the artwork for wallpapers or other PERSONAL digital graphics, so long as the artwork itself is unaltered
• Print up to three copies for PERSONAL use
The Client may not resell, profit from, or market the image.
Commercial work (such as for book covers, prints, logos, advertisement, pay-sites, art CDs, etc.) will require a special contract between the client and myself. The commissioner must purchase rights of the image or pay royalties. These fees are negotiable and the intent must be stated before payment is sent.
The client always retains 100% of their rights and ownership of their respective characters.
I do, however, retain artist and reproduction rights to the images I create unless specified in a contract.
As the artist, this means that I may:
• Upload the commission to my online galleries
• Use the work as in an example in my personal portfolios
• Share WIPs and teaser images from the project
• Produce artwork, prints and other merchandise based off the project
If I decide to use a commission piece as a print or a submission in an art book/portfolio in the future, the client will be fully credited for their character(s) and influence. As a courtesy, I will always check with the client before doing so.
If you wish to purchase artist rights, the fee can be negotiated.
